Experts have always recommended consuming lots of fruits and vegetables since they contain antioxidants, those so desired components that help to curb the effects of free radicals.
A team of researchers from the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center has added some spices to the list of antioxidants. Thanks to a work done in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture and published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, has shown that the herb with greater antioxidant activity is oregano.
This plant has an activity 3 to 20 times greater than other substances that have been studied. Also, its antioxidant capacity is 42 times higher than apples, 30 more than potatoes, 12 more than oranges and 4 more than cranberries.
Therefore, it is highly recommended to use oregano to spice up food, instead of salt or other chemical additives. This way, dishes acquire a special and pleasant flavor and are also healthy. For example, a spoonful of oregano contains the same antioxidant activity as half an apple, doesn’t cause hypertension as salt does, and it is delicious.

Osteoporosis: oregano possesses beta-caryophyllene, a substance that according to scientists from the University of Bonn in Germany, is very favorable to treat osteoporosis and arteriosclerosis since it helps prevent inflammation.
Parasites: according to an investigation by the Faculty of Chemistry of the Autonomous University of Queretaro in Mexico, oregano oil helps to reduce or eliminate certain strains of gastrointestinal parasites and their symptoms; this is due to the action of substances such as anti- giardia, cymene, thymol, among others.
Antimicrobial: carvacrol is a compound found in oregano oil, which helps kill bacteria, viruses and fungi, as well as prevent their growth.
